I'm told this is quite a rare sight as they fly only at night and live about a week. Taken at my sister's summer cabin in Quebec around 7:00 am. This beauty is about 5 inches tall from antennae to tail and about 4.5 inches wide. I had to gently touch its head to make it open its wings. The pinkish line on top of his wings was soft as velvet and the wings as thin as silk paper. The caterpillar that produces these beauties can reach 3 inches long and about the width of a dime.
